1 Introduction

It is well know that quadratic integers are either maths where maths (first kind) and maths is square free, or maths where maths are both odd and maths (second kind). It is also well known that the confrac expansion of a quadratic surd is (ultimately) periodic. If we plot the period of maths versus the period of maths for all maths in maths, we obtain FIG. 1.1, i.e. "quite equal or quite triple".
